Danbury Mint 1:24 1948 Buick Roadmaster- Coupe

Of the late forties Buicks, the Roadmaster was the ‘berries’! When DM first introduced the Roadmaster in coupe form and in the 1948 model year, it was received with accolades from buyers and diecast scribes alike. Issued in 2004 in its two-tone, Nickel Gray/Cumulus Gray combo, we knew it wouldn’t take long to see the convertible and wagon version follow in its successful tire prints. Only DM threw us a slider and issued the convertible as a 1947 vintage in 2005. The next ’47 debuted in Estate Wagon fashion in ’07 along with a ’47 convertible later that year.

It wasn’t until this year that we have been given the buyer’s choice of the ’48 coupe and convertible; the coupe, chronicled here in gorgeous Honolulu Blue, and the drop top in formal Black. Like the original two-tone gray, but in a solid shade, this baby comes with all the ground-breaking bells and whistles that you’ll just love to ring and toot as you show it off.

The suspension may just be the best working feature of its kind in all of diecastdom. I hereby submit: On a flat surface, it renders flawless stance. But give the front a gentle push downward, and it articulates as if you were a giant, in 1948, pushing down on a 1:1 Roadmaster as it leaves the factory. It is suitably squishy but instantly returns to point. Try the rear; same deal. Go ahead and do one side then the other – well, ok, I think I made my point here. I nominate it as best suspension in the realm of 1:24th. And if the hood opening capabilities aren’t legendary by now, you have a valuable surprise awaiting you when you buy your first DM Roadmaster.

You know the hood opened from either side. So does the Danbury model. Open one side and the other holds on to two realistic hinges. Close it and reverse the order and the opposite side reciprocates. And as with the initial ’48 Roadmaster model, the fuel filler door opens and the doors and trunk lid show off their authentic hinges. The trunk also reveals a telescoping prop rod, removable spare, a jacking sticker and authentic floor mat. Up front, the windshield wipers are operational and that aforementioned hood gives rise to a beautiful sight; the big, bad-for-its-time, Buick “Fireball” straight eight. A model lovers dream, it’s presented in all its engine detail-rich scaling. Wires, fuel lines, water hoses and linkage are finely crafted and available on one of the best diecast models ever put on sale to the buying public.

You may stand the hood’s prop rod up for either side’s opening, and when open from the drivers side, don’t forget to check out the fuel filtration system. Awesome! So is the interior. From floor to inner roof and dashboard to rear seat the authenticity of the grey interior is rich and luxurious.

The big Buick is one of the nicer looking diecasts among your collection in this solid color rendition. Not too flashy, not to withdrawn. Just don’t go overboard with the working suspension!
