When is a Yenko not a Yenko? When it's a Douglas Yenko of course!

For the three of you that have never heard of Don Yenko, here’s a bit of the lore as to why the rest of the world is so darn crazy about his cars. Yenko owned a Chevy dealership in Pennsylvania. He would order specifically customized cars through GM’s Central Order Purchasing Office (thus the acronym COPO.) The customer had the option of accepting the car as it was, or could have go-fast items added to the car, such as gauges, headers, fiberglass hoods, mag wheels, etc. The cars became so popular he licensed making them to other dealers such as Jack Douglas.

What Douglas gave his customers were the trappings that made a Yenko famous. The obvious change is the decal kit with Yenko markings all the way around along with the famous sYc headrest logos. More importantly, the customer received the thunder creating all-aluminum ZL1 427 modeled here with vivid detail from wires to battery caps to decals. But here’s the rub: while a Don Yenko Yenko had specific colors and special badging these weren’t replicated the same way at Douglas Chevrolet. Not only did Douglas do a car in Dover White – a Camaro color that never rolled out of Yenko’s operation - the Douglas version has the Chevy bowtie front and center while a Canonsberg Yenko left the front grill blank. And on the back (and on the exterior packaging) is a Jack Douglas dealership emblem. This is the perfect type of subtle variation that is Supercars sweet spot – their attention to detail is just this side of ferocious.

The Highway 61 base model is well appointed; brightwork all around the car is well done and the bare metal foil trim where it exists is well applied. Hinges are realistic, the front seats are adjustable and doors close tight. The chassis features a rotating drive shaft and sufficient extruded detail.

The tires are white lettered and replicated with authenticity. The Torque Thrust mags are sharp - I actually prefer that look on the Camaro compared to other options. The vynil roof is also a different look from most muscle cars of the age but the black and white contrast just makes this model look all that more special. In the trunk, you get a bonus, a Yenko sales card like you might find on the windsheild in the dealer lot. Now that's hip!

So what we have here is something the same yet different – you could put this in a line of Yenko models and challenge people to notice the difference. Okay, so between you and me, you're unlikely to use it for some parlor game. Of course we both know this, but at least it might help you explain why you had to get one more Yenko model to your wife. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
