Coventry based LTI Ltd(UK) has been making purpose-built taxis since 1948 being responsible for the 'Black Taxi' as a British icon. Originally known as Carbodies Ltd, they have been coachbuilders since 1919, Through acquisitions and mergers to bring manufacturing, marketing and sales together, London Taxis International was formed in 1984.

This is the TXl introduced in 1997 and then replaced by the TXll in 2002. The TX series was designed for maximum accessibility for the handicapped and wheelchair bound. The license authorizes a maximum capacity of 6 persons. I see one rear bench that would seat 3, 2 jump seats and the driver's seat. There is no front passenger seat, leaving the left rear entry open for wheelchair maneuvering.

If you're expecting a companion to SunStar's magnificent London Bus, you'll be a bit disappointed in this model's content. The trunk and front doors are not operable, the undercarriage static and molded-in. The paint seems to suffer from poor metal prepping as there are a myriad of micro-imperfections that can be reduced by compounding, but there are many that are too deep to be removed completely. There is also glue residue that could be removed from the painted surfaces, but as you can see in the last picture, bit into the plastic rear bumper. The engine, which represents a 2.4liter Ford diesel looks decent from a distance, but is only molded part way down, ending in a solid plastic base. The interior is monochrome gray, save for the various signage and the yellow safety handles, grips and seat edges. If there is any chrome hardware in the 1:1, it's gray here. The lenses are all plastic except the side lights, but the front lighting suffers from those locator pin "bullseyes".

This is not an expensive model, so I can't really come down too hard on SunStar for this piece. I would have hoped that there would have been a more worthy companion for the London Bus in the same scale. This model would look very nice in a Heathrow souvenir shop for tourists to take home with them. For the collector, it leaves a bit to be desired. 2 stars for this one.
